What is Kambô?
Kambô is one of the most extraordinary natural healing gifts available to humanity. Kambô is a resinous secretion from one of the largest Hylid frogs known as the Giant Waxy Monkey Tree Frog, scientifically known as Phyllomedusa Bicolor. Its secretion is not a sweat nor a poison in the sense that it alone is not capable of causing death or illness. Larger than the size of a man’s fist with no predators, they live and thrive 20 – 50 metres up in the jungle canopy.
The Frog is abundant across the Upper Amazon rainforest areas of Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, French Guiana, Suriname and Venezuela. The secretion is also called Sapo, Dow-Kiet, Hunting magic, Ordeal medicine, “Vaccine of the forest” or “Guardian of the Leaf”. In the Amazon, it is regarded as a medicine however this should not be confused with the Western definition of a medicine. Kambô is not a medicine and those that administer it are practitioners and not doctors. Indigenous tribes have used Kambô for centuries, for different reasons.
Amazonian tribes take Kambô before hunting to ensure greater success. It heightens their senses, and strengthens and energizes them, allowing hunters to run faster with more stamina, without needing as much food, water, or sleep. It’s frequently used as a jungle medicine to treat snake bites, malaria, infections, and fever. Interestingly it’s also used to clear ‘Panema’ – a word that loosely translates to negative energy, dark energy, or bad luck. Like all of nature, the Kambô frog is revered by the tribes so it is returned to the jungle unharmed after the collection.
Over the course of three decades, scientists have shown that the Kambô secretion contains a unique and highly complex chemical cocktail of bio-active peptides beneficial to the human body. It is alleged that over 70 patents have been lodged, but so far, none of these single isolated peptide extracts has come close to this healing modality in its entirety in nature.
Kambô is one of the strongest natural ways to fortify the immune system, and one of nature’s most powerful anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antibiotic and anaesthetic substances.
The IUCN database continually lists the Kambo frog in the ‘Least Concern’ category given their wide distribution and large population. The only known threats to this species of frog at the moment are spawn predation and the potential destruction of their habitat.

What to expect during a Kambô treatment
A Kambô treatment begins with preparing the medicine. The dried secretion is mixed with water to form a paste, resembling a small ball of wasabi. Small, superficial burns are gently made on the skin, and the top layer is removed to expose the lymphatic tissue beneath. These openings, called “points,” serve as the gateway for Kambô to enter the lymphatic system, the core of the body’s immune function.
What You May Experience During the Treatment:
Once applied to the points, Kambô quickly spreads through the body, triggering various physiological responses. These can include changes in blood pressure, body temperature, muscle contractions, and tear production. While the experience can feel intense and uncomfortable, it typically lasts only 20 to 40 minutes.
Initial Reactions: A warm flushing sensation, increased heart rate, and pressure in the head or upper body.
Physical Symptoms: Swelling, dizziness, trembling, tingling, sweating, nausea, and general bodily discomfort. Some people may even faint briefly.
The Purge: Kambô works by releasing toxins and dense energy through purging, which can involve vomiting, sweating, or other detoxifying processes.
For some, the experience also brings moments of deep calm, meditation, or even euphoria and bliss. Each session is highly individual, with Kambo intuitively navigating the body to find and clear what needs healing.
After the Treatment:
Following the session, participants often feel either deeply energized or exhausted. It is recommended to rest and allow the body to fully integrate the medicine’s effects. Over the next few days, many report feeling rejuvenated, clear-headed, and full of energy, while others may notice more subtle shifts.
Healing and Detoxification:
In some cases, a short-term detox reaction (known as a Herxheimer response) may occur as the body clears a large amount of toxins. If a latent illness is present, its symptoms may temporarily surface as Kambô works to address and release what no longer serves the body.
Kambô is often described as a “heart medicine,” helping individuals reconnect with their center and realign with their inner truth. Each ceremony is a powerful, visceral experience—an initiation into the present moment. At its core, Kambô carries the energy of the warrior, offering a rare opportunity for profound transformation and healing.

The Sanctuary
The Sanctuary is a beautiful, private quinta and Pola Vida’s home, situated in the Central Algarve near Moncarapacho/Olhão, in the middle of the wonderful, tranquil nature park around the Cerro da Cabeça mountain and close to the sea. The charming fisherman’s town of Fuseta is just 10 minutes away, and within 20 minutes you can reach the city of Olhão.
The outside area of the quinta is a green oasis, surrounded by nature and a large private pool with an ocean view. The retreat location allows you to reconnect with nature’s rhythms and find inspiration in the natural world. It’s a perfect backdrop for your journey of self-discovery and empowerment. There are also amazing treks for hiking in the area.
How to get there
By Car:
The Sanctuary is situated in the nature park around the Cerro da Cabeça mountain, near Moncarapacho. You will receive a detailed description and the coordinates with your booking.
By Airplane:
The nearest airport is Faro Airport (35km). From the airport, you can take a taxi to our place, or the Faro train station (15 min) to take the train to Fuseta, from where we can pick you up.
By Train:
The nearest train station is in Fuseta (25 min from Faro or 3.5 hours from Lisbon). From there we will pick you up. You can book the train here: www.cp.pt

Our creative chef will spoil you with delicious vegetarian and vegan meals, with mostly local and organic ingredients. We will enjoy making you feel nourished from the inside and outside, feeding not only your stomach but all your senses.
Amazing smells, tastes, and textures, made and served with the greatest Love. Eat in a cosy room by the fireplace, or on the outside terrace with a sea view!

Prices are for 2 nights accommodation incl. meals during the retreat.
* Shared Room: 110€ p.person
The rooms have a terrace with a sea view, 3 single beds and a mezzanine with a double mattress. Shared bathroom and toilet.
* Camping: 90€ p.person
Choose a beautiful spot in nature on the property for your tent, or van. With excess to outdoor showers, compost toilets, and shared bathrooms.
* Private Studio: 240€ p.person | 300€ for couples
Complete privacy in a studio with a king-size bed, a private bathroom, air conditioning, and floor heating. (2 available)
* Glamping Bell Tent: 220€ p.person | 280€ for couples
The bell tents are in a perfect hidden spot in the midst of nature with a compost toilet and outdoor solar shower. (2 available)
CONTRA-INDICATIONS & CONSIDERATIONS
Those who can not participate are:
- People who are under 18 years of age.
- People who have had a stroke.
- People who have serious heart problems.
- People who have had a brain haemorrhage.
- People who have aneurysms or blood clots.
- People who are undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
- People who are taking medication for low blood pressure.
- People who lack the mental capacity to make their own decision to take Kambô.
- People who have serious mental health problems (excluding depression, PTSD and anxiety)
- People who are taking immune-suppressants for organ transplants.
- People with Addison’s disease.
- People with current and severe epilepsy.
- People who are recovering from a major surgical procedure. (recent hernia op included)
- Women who are pregnant or suspect they may be so.
- Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding babies under the age of 6 months old.
- People who have taken Bufo Alvarius (toad secretion) in the last 6-8 weeks prior to Kambô.
- Kambô should NOT be applied to animals.
Cautions & Considerations:
Extra caution is required in the following cases, It’s important to disclose any of these prior to your session:
- People taking slimming, serotonin, and/or sleeping supplements.
- People taking immune suppressants for auto-immune disorders.
- People who have been fasting/water-fasting for 7 days before (or after) Kambô.
- People who plan to use a sauna (FIR or other) or practice hot yoga 3 days before (or after) Kambô.
- People who have had enemas, colonics, liver flushes, or any water-based detox 3 days before (or after) taking Kambô.
- People who have been using distilled water for detox/fasting.
It’s also important to disclose any of the following prior to the session:
- If you’re taking or have recently stopped taking any medications.
- If you’re taking or have recently stopped taking any diet/slimming pills.
- If you’re regularly taking anti-diuretic medication or sports drinks.
- If you have ever been, or are currently bulimic or anorexic.
- If you’re epileptic. A caretaker will be required.
- If you have abnormally high or low blood pressure.
- If you have liver or kidney problems.
- If you have any chronic or serious health issues.
- If you have asthma.
- If you have diabetes. (type I or type II)

Payment and Cancellation Policy
Payment: A payment of the total price of the event is required to complete your booking and guarantee your space. In case of a payment of a deposit, the remaining amount is due by the latest 21 days before the first day of the event to guarantee your spot. A deposit of 30% of the total price of the event is non-refundable.
Cancellations: Requesting cancellation for any event is only accepted if sent by email. A cancellation fee of 30% of the total price of the event is applied until 21 days before the first day of the event and includes any non-refundable deposit. If a request for cancellation is done within 21 days prior to the first day of the event, no refunds will be applied unless there is another participant filling your space. – Please read the Terms & Conditions.
